Our alpaca journey started one Saturday morning when Arleen was watching a television show called California Heartland. Using Joan Spears’ El Ranchito in Santa Ynez, CA, it showed how alpacas could be a wonderful way of life and a business. After sending for information, and visiting El Ranchito and Heartland Ranch in Arizona, we decided to pursue the “Alpaca Lifestyle”. We purchased our first alpaca from Heartland Ranch, and attended all of the informational and “hands on” classes that were given there.

Our first ranch (sold in June, 2007) was located on 12 acres in the rolling, juniper-grassland covered hills 20 miles northwest of Prescott, Arizona. Our home, barn, and perimeter fences were finished by April, 2001. Arleen resigned her position as an imaging technologist in Newport Beach, California. We sold our home in southern California and moved in August of 2001.

Our new Far View Ranch is located in the scenic, rolling grasslands and wine region of southeastern Arizona (Elgin) on 38+ acres at an elevation of 4,800 feet. This is the area where the "classic" movies Red River (John Wayne) and Oklahoma (the train station musical number scene) were filmed. The main house, casita, barn, and perimeter and interior fences, were completed in August, 2008. Jerry still commutes very week to a college in southern California, where he teaches Physical Geography and Weather and Climate.

Our professional backgrounds, careful planning, and love of the animals have enabled us to provide a healthy, safe, and fun environment for our alpacas. Our invaluable alpaca protectors include Tia (Anatolian Shepherd, semi-retired), Hunter (Great Pyrenees), and Panda (Heeler mix). They know their job, do it well, and make visitors feel welcome.

We have 36 alpacas and 2 guanacos, which we take care of, know individually, and enjoy. Our herd is from diverse bloodlines including Sundance, Serono, Hemingway, Drambui, El Padre, Don Julio, Trinidad, Escobar, Neruda, and Presidio, with colors ranging from white to black. The goals of our breeding program are to continually improve confirmation and the fineness and density of the fiber.

Our store is located in a casita, where we carry a little bit of everything alpaca, and where our out-of-town visitors will be able to stay.

Come enjoy our alpacas, and see how we've organized our ranch and why we call it Far View.
